A leaking shower wall can remain hidden until damp patches, peeling paint or a musty smell appear in the bathroom or an adjoining room. This project involved shower wall waterproofing in Newcastle after water passed behind the wall covering and damaged the surface underneath.

Instead of simply covering the visible damage, we opened the affected area, repaired the wall, added waterproof protection and installed a clean new finish.

Common warning signs include:

Peeling or bubbling paint Damp marks on the opposite side of the wall

Soft or swollen plasterboard Mould that keeps returning Loose wall panels or cracked silicone

A persistent damp or musty smell

These signs should not be ignored. Installing new panels or painting over a damp wall may hide the damage temporarily, but it will not stop the underlying problem.

Finding the Source of the Leak

Before beginning any shower wall waterproofing, the source of the water must be identified.

Water may enter through failed silicone, damaged joints, loose shower panels or a leaking pipe or fitting. If the problem is connected to plumbing, the leak must be repaired before the wall is rebuilt and waterproofed.

In this project, the damaged section was opened so the condition of the wall behind the shower could be properly inspected.

How We Repaired and Waterproofed the Shower Wall

1. Removed the Damaged Materials Wet and weakened sections of the wall were carefully removed. Covering damaged material would have trapped moisture behind the new finish.

2. Allowed the Area to Dry The exposed wall was checked and allowed to dry before any new boards, waterproofing products or wall panels were installed.

3. Repaired the Wall Surface The damaged section was rebuilt using a suitable backer board to create a stable surface for the new shower wall finish.

4. Sealed the Joints and Corners Board joints, corners and vulnerable areas were sealed carefully. These are common places for water to penetrate when they are not properly protected.

5. Applied a Waterproof Membrane A waterproof membrane was applied to protect the repaired wall from moisture. This created an additional barrier behind the finished shower panels.

6. Installed the New Shower Wall Panels New PVC shower panels were fitted over the prepared and waterproofed surface. The edges and connections were then sealed to create a clean, water-resistant finish. 

Why the Surface Finish Is Not Enough

 Tiles and PVC shower panels help protect a bathroom wall, but the areas behind them also need to be properly prepared.

 Corners, joints, pipe openings and panel edges are particularly vulnerable. A reliable repair therefore requires more than replacing the visible wall covering. The damaged material must be removed, the cause of the leak corrected and the wall properly waterproofed before the final finish is installed.

When Should You Call a Professional?

Arrange an inspection if:

• The wall feels soft or swollen
• Water has reached an adjoining room
• Mould returns after cleaning
• Shower panels or tiles are becoming loose
• The leak source is difficult to locate
• There is visible damage behind the shower                                                                                                Minor silicone damage may sometimes be repaired before it causes a larger problem. However, once water has damaged the wall behind the shower, a more complete repair is usually required.
