Kitchen Cabinet Repairs in Newcastle: Doors, Hinges & Handles

Kitchen cabinet repairs in Newcastle can often restore damaged cupboard doors, loose hinges, broken handles and worn edging without replacing the entire kitchen.

Many kitchen cabinet repairs in Newcastle involve restoring individual doors, hinges, fittings or panels. At Handyman MultiFix, we carry out both small cupboard adjustments and more involved repairs. Here are the problems we can assess, followed by three documented repair examples and one additional home-maintenance visit.

Common Kitchen Cabinet Repairs in Newcastle

Kitchen cupboard doors that won’t close properly

A door may sit lower than its neighbour, catch on the frame or leave an uneven gap. This can happen when concealed hinges have shifted, screws have loosened or the mounting area has worn. The solution may be as simple as realigning the door, but a damaged hinge or fixing point sometimes needs replacing or repairing.

Loose, broken or rusty cabinet hinges

With everyday use, hinges can wear out and fixing screws may stop gripping MDF or chipboard properly. Depending on the condition of the door and cabinet, we may adjust the existing hinges, replace the hardware, repair a fixing area or use a suitable repair plate.

Handles, drawers and other fittings

We can also repair or replace loose handles, sticking drawers and worn catches. It is worth checking whether the problem is with the fitting, the screws or the panel supporting it before ordering new parts.

Damaged MDF, chipboard and cabinet edging

Edges around sink units are particularly vulnerable to moisture. Water can loosen edging strips and cause exposed MDF or chipboard to swell. When the board remains sound, we can sometimes replace the damaged edging without removing the cabinet. If the board feels soft or has lost strength, we may need to replace the affected section. We also check and address the moisture source before repairing the edge.

Real repair #1: Replacing worn hinges on a white kitchen cupboard

In one white-cabinet project, the existing concealed hinges showed clear wear and corrosion. The mounting area also needed attention. We replaced worn hinge hardware as part of the repair, with the photographs documenting the condition before the work and a replacement hinge fitted afterwards.

Not every loose cabinet hinge requires a full door replacement. The important first step is to check that the surrounding board is sound enough to support a lasting fixing.

Real repair #2: Water-damaged kitchen cabinet edging

On a separate kitchen project, water exposure had damaged the edging strip on the cabinet beneath the sink. The water-damaged strip left the cabinet edge looking worn and exposed. These kitchen cupboard repairs can be worthwhile when the underlying panel is still sound.

In this case, we replaced the damaged edging strip rather than changing the entire cabinet. The two photographs show the area before the work and after replacement. The photographs use different camera angles.

Replacing an edging strip is only appropriate where the underlying cabinet material can still support it. If water has swollen or weakened the panel, a new board may provide a better repair. If moisture is coming from pipework, see our separate guide to kitchen sink leak repair in Newcastle.

Real repair #3: Cupboard door repair and a five-star customer review

Another separate project involved a wood-effect cupboard door. The customer later shared a photograph and a five-star Google review about the door-fixing work:

Additional home-maintenance example: A wider repair visit

At another property, we attended a wider home-maintenance visit. The photograph below shows the white cupboards and drawers at that property; it does not document a completed cabinet repair.

Repair or replace: which makes more sense?

If the cabinet carcass is solid, repairing or replacing the affected hinge, handle, door or edging may be more practical than replacing the entire unit. When moisture has weakened the underlying board, repeated fixings fail or several panels are badly damaged, partial or full replacement may be more suitable.

The best option depends on the damage, the materials and whether matching replacement components are available. We recommend assessing the condition rather than assuming a whole new kitchen is necessary. For related fitting and timber work, explore our carpentry and joinery services in Newcastle.

What Affects the Cost of Kitchen Cabinet Repairs in Newcastle?

Costs vary according to the number of cabinets, the fault, access and any parts or materials required. Adjusting a hinge is a different job from replacing an MDF panel or repairing water-damaged edging, so we quote according to the actual work involved.

Frequently asked questions

Can you fix a cupboard door that won’t close without replacing it?

Often, yes. If the door and the supporting cabinet are sound, adjusting or replacing the hinges or their fixings may be enough.

Can damaged MDF kitchen cabinets be repaired?

We can often repair small areas of damage. MDF or chipboard that has swollen badly or lost strength may need the affected section replacing.

Can a handyman replace kitchen cabinet hinges?

Yes. We can inspect and replace suitable concealed hinges, check the mounting points and adjust the doors afterwards. Correct hinge compatibility matters.

Does damaged edging mean I need a new kitchen cupboard?

Not always. If the board beneath the edging remains sound, the damaged strip may be replaceable. Persistent moisture or a weakened panel needs further attention.
